He is a doublebass-player, composer and digital artist. Jan Schacher is active in electronic and experimental music, in jazz, contemporary music, performance and installation art as well as writing music for chamber-ensembles, theatre and film. As an artist-researcher and educator performing on stage and other environments he works with and through sound and presence. He holds a PhD in Arts from the Royal Conservatoire and University of Antwerp. He is also an Executive Board Member of the Society of Artistic Research.<\/p>\n<p><b>&#8220;Artificial Intelligence in the Context of Artistic Research&#8221;<\/b><\/p>\n<p>While pondering what the core of Artistic Research (AR) comprises and while seeking to understand how Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools and processes connect and can be integrated with AR, at first a sense of contraction or impossibility might arises.<\/p>\n<p>The core of AR is based on artistic creation as a means for developing understanding about the artistic process itself but also its significance in dimensions, such as aesthetic, embodied experience. Making this personal understanding explicit and articulated beyond the primary form and phenomenon then becomes the central demand of AR.<\/p>\n<p>As the current commercial models of AI are based on generative approaches from statistical similarities based on very large datasets (be it in text, image, or music), the question then becomes whether and how they could have relevance for the core research act, or merely around it.<\/p>\n<p>Specific questions within this field could be:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Beyond the currently dominant discourse and the tools pushed as AI, what do generative, algorithmic, machine-assisted, or even autonomous systems provide for artistic research?<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">In an artistic research paradigm that stipulates knowledge production within and through artistic practice, where do machine assisted processes have a place and how?<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Which tools, processes, and approaches provide useful extensions\/augmentations for artistic creation and epistemic development?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This lecture and seminar will attempt to explore such questions from a number of different angles:<br \/>\na historical perspective &#8211; both technically and conceptually;<br \/>\na conceptual mapping &#8211; what we mean by AI and what types of categories, tools, processes exist;<br \/>\nlooking at current practices &#8211; tools and workflows;<br \/>\nunderstanding disciplinary differences &#8211; from purely analog to intrinsically digital practices;<br \/>\npractice vs research with regard to understanding at which phase machine assistance can be used.<\/p>\n<p>On a larger scope, discussions around issues form an important part of the participatory workshop. Issues such as relevance for arts, social problems around impact mitigation and dealing with refusal or over enthusiasm, as well as the socio-political dimensions of dealing with an inherently
