Early Music

The Early Music Curriculum at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre offers a comprehensive approach to the study of music from historical periods up to the Classical era. This curriculum focuses on enhancing students’ performance skills and knowledge through a detailed and rigorous examination of historical performance practices.

Students have the opportunity to study various baroque instruments such as harpsichord, baroque violin, viola da gamba, baroque cello, fortepiano, recorder, traverse flute, baroque bassoon, baroque trumpet, baroque oboe, lute, and theorbo. Baroque singing, vocal ensemble and historical dance are also part of the curriculum. Both individual and ensemble lessons are considered important aspects of the learning process.

The curriculum does not only involve instruction, but includes a range of activities designed to enrich students’ understanding of early music. Master classes, lectures and seminars are regularly organised, often in collaboration with other music universities in Europe, providing students with a broader perspective and the opportunity to engage with their international peers.

Every March, EAMT hosts the Ceciliana Early Music Festival. This festival features contributions from students and teachers from music universities across Europe, providing a platform for shared learning and performance. The festival allows the students and faculty members of EAMT to present their work alongside their international counterparts, fostering a vibrant and collaborative learning environment.
