The Theatre Department of the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre provides a comprehensive education in theatre and contemporary performance. Our alumni have made significant contributions to both the local and international theatre scene, working professionally on stage, in film, television, and radio. With its combination of theoretical knowledge and practical skills, the Theatre Department provides an ideal environment for students to develop and advance their talents in the performing arts under guidance of experienced actors, directors, choreographers, theatre and music pedagogues, theatre historians and representatives of other theatre and humanitarian fields. Theatre studies are offered at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels.
Bachelor studies
Our Bachelor’s program is designed to impart a strong foundation in psychological theatre and the latest developments in theatre art. The four-year program, entirely taught in Estonian, allows for specialisation in acting, directing, or dramaturgy. Admission is offered every other year.
Master studies
It is possible to choose between two Master of Arts (MA) programs. The MA in Contemporary Physical Performance Making (CPPM) is a revolutionary program, taught entirely in English by world renowned companies and artists, takes students out of the classroom and into the studio, fostering their artistic vision as both performers and creators. This cutting-edge program provides a unique opportunity for those seeking to make their mark on the international contemporary performance scene.
The two-year MA in Dramatic Art and Theatre Pedagogy, taught in Estonian, allows students to deepen their knowledge of theatre, get acquainted with various modern methods and acquire the teaching skills to work as a theatre pedagogue.
Doctoral studies
The Doctoral Studies program provides the opportunity to engage in academic or artistic research in the field of theatre and performance over a period of four years. The program offers the choice to conduct research in either Estonian or English, and is administered by the Centre of Doctoral Studies.
