International Music Olympiade (IMuO)

The International Music Olympiade (IMuO) is aimed to promote music education and creativity in music among European pre-university students, and facilitate international contacts between young musicians. The idea of organizing the International Music Olympiad was born in Estonia in 2012 and in the same year the 1st IMuO was held in Tallinn.

The International Music Olympiad (IMuO) is organized in every two years as a competition for students of general comprehensive primary and secondary education and is a competition amongst individuals. The competition is open for countries from Europe and beyond.

A Country’s Contestants should be citizens or residents of that Country and should be selected through the Country’s National Music Olympiad or equivalent selection programme. Contestants must be enrolled in full-time comprehensive education on the year of the Olympiad.

The Regulations of the Olympiad are published on the website of the organizing country.

Countries participating in IMuO accept the responsibility of organizing the competition themselves at some point of time.

Academic Committee of the IMuO

The Academic Committee consists of 7 to 9 permanent members. The organizing country can nominate an additional member. The founding members of the Academic Committee are listed below. The detailed rules regarding nomination and election of the members of the Academic Committee will be discussed with the permanent members during the Olympiad.

Rūta Girdzijauskienė, Professor of the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre, President of the Lithuanian Music Teachers Association, a board member of the European Association for Music in Schools (EAS), and a board member of the European Network for Music Educators and Researchers of Young Children (EuNET MERYC). On Rūta Girdzijauskienė’s initiative, the Lithuanian Music Olympiad for Students has been organised since 2012. Her publications include two monographs, ten teacher handbooks, and more than a hundred research studies and practice-based articles.

Jiřina Jiřičková, Vice-Dean for Academic Affairs at the Faculty of Education, Charles University, a member of the Department of Music Education there. At the same time, she is a choirmaster of a children’s choir. Jiřina Jiřičková is a member of the Executive Committee of the Society for Music Education of Czechia and a Vice-President of the Czech Orff Society (COS).

Ene Kangron, Head of the Continuing Education Centre of the Estonian Academy of Music (EAMT) since 1998 to the present, lecturer of choral conducting (1986-2003), Head of Music Education Department and conductor of the Female Choir of the EAMT (1991-1994), Estonian National coordinator for European Association for Music in Schools – EAS (2003-2021), EAS board member (2009-2015), President of the IMuO Academic Committee since 2016, chair of Estonian National Music Olympiads (2002-2024).

Ruta Kanteruka, the National Coordinator of the EAS; head of the Latvian Music Teachers’ Association since 2010, music teacher with 20 years of experience currently working at King’s College Latvia, a member of the organizing committee of the International Music Olympiad since 2012.

Gabriela Karin Konkol , Associate Professor at the Faculty of Choral Conducting, Church Music, Artistic Education, Rhythmics and Jazz of the Stanislaw Moniuszko Academy of Music in Gdansk, Poland. Author of the European Integration – Bologna Process. Implications for Music Education monograph, many articles and chapters in books in the field of music education. Member of the Editorial Board of The Journal of Music Education (Ljubljana) and Školski vjesnik – Journal for Pedagogic Theory and Practice (Split). Lecturer/workshop leader in many European countries and also in Israel, Russia and Turkey. Jury member of international music competitions and Olympiads. Member of ISME, board member of the European Association for Music in Schools (2009-2013).

Branka Rotar Pance, Associate Professor at the Department of Music Pedagogy at the Academy of Music (University of Ljubljana, Slovenia). She gives lectures on music didactic at the Bachelor and Masters programme and supervises doctoral students. Her research interests lie in the different fields of music education, motivation, working with gifted students, musical creativity, ICT in music education, lifelong learning of music teachers, arts and cultural education and the history of Slovenian music pedagogy. She is the chair of the Slovenian Music Olympiad and a jury member at the International Music Olympiads.
