Rafael Muñoz-Torrero Santos was appointed Professor of Violin in 2018 after successfully passing the national qualification examinations, and has since been teaching at the Manuel Castillo Conservatory of Music in Seville, where he continues to work today.
Born in Seville, he studied violin at the Manuel Castillo Conservatory before continuing his education at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, where he studied for four years with Professor Keiko Wataya on scholarships from JONDE and the Spanish Ministry of Culture. In 2013 he earned a Master’s degree in Music Performance and Research under Ilya Grubert at the International University of Valencia (VIU), and in 2017 he completed his PhD in Music at the Polytechnic University of Valencia.
Muñoz-Torrero successfully auditioned for the Spanish National Youth Orchestra (JONDE), the European Union Youth Orchestra (EUYO), and the Galicia Symphony Orchestra, where he was a member from 2005 to 2010. Since 2018 he has also collaborated regularly with the Baroque Orchestra of Seville. His orchestral career has taken him to major concert halls including the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Musikverein in Vienna, London’s Royal Albert Hall, the Usher Hall in Edinburgh, the Kölner Philharmonie, the Rome Opera House, the Konzerthaus Berlin, and the Sala São Paulo in Brazil.
He has taken part in recordings for labels such as Deutsche Grammophon, Decca, and Dynamic, and has made the first world recording of violin works by the Spanish violinist Fernando Palatín, soon to be released by IBS Classical.
