Pierre-Emmanuel Rousseau (1979) is a stage director as well as set and costume designer working internationally in opera. He has directed productions for major opera houses and festivals across Europe and North America, including the Estonian National Opera (Carmen), Opéra de Québec (Roméo et Juliette), Teatro Regio di Torino (La Rondine, I Puritani), Opéra National du Rhin (Hänsel und Gretel), and opera houses in Nantes, Rennes, Rouen, Saint-Étienne, and Biel.
His repertoire spans a wide range of works from Rossini and Donizetti to Puccini, Gounod, Berlioz, and Massenet. Alongside directing, Rousseau frequently designs sets and costumes, often shaping complete visual and dramaturgical concepts for productions such as Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Don Pasquale, La Clemenza di Tito, Semiramide, and Les Fées du Rhin.
A significant milestone in his career was the 2010 production of Grétry’s L’Amant jaloux at the Royal Opera of Versailles, which inaugurated the reopening of the venue. The production was broadcast on Mezzo and France 2 and later released on DVD.
In addition to his stage work, Pierre-Emmanuel Rousseau is active as a pedagogue, giving masterclasses at institutions including the Atelier Lyrique of Opéra de Montréal, the Conservatoire de Neuchâtel, the Conservatorio Benedetto Marcello in Venice, and other international academies.
