Anders Jormin was born 1957 in Jönköping, Sweden. After intense musical studies, he left Musikhögskolan in Göteborg with diplomas in double-bass and improvisation as well as in pedagogy in 1979. Since then, he has been given several prestigious prizes and awards, such as the rare Jan Johanson-award, the Swedish Radio Prize ”Guldkatten” and the Swedish Royal Academy of Music´s Big prize. His first solo bass recording “Alone” won “Record of the year – all categories worldwide” in 1991. He is five times winner of the Swedish Grammy award for best jazz recording and he is often mentioned as one of the most influential and original bassists in the field of improvised music.
Anders Jormin has been for over 40 years a teacher of double bass and improvisation at the Academy of Music and Drama of the Gothenburg University, where he once initiated and where he has participated in building up a strong and leading Improvised Music Department, still being the department´s artistic leader. He is also a lecturer much in demand at master classes and workshops all over Europe.
In 1996, he was given a professorship at Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland and in 2001 also at the Stockholm Royal College of Music.
2004 Anders Jormin was given the title doctor honoris causa – together with maestro Esa-Pekka Salonen and Georg Sokolov – at the Sibelius Academy, Finland. In 2014 he became Honory doctor also of the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre. 2019-2022 he held a guest supervising professorship at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre.
Today, as a double bass-player and composer, Anders Jormin is a frequent and highly respected performer on the international concert scene. As a musician in great demand, he has recorded and toured with many of the legends in jazz suc as Gilberto Gil, Lee Konitz, Elvin Jones, Joe Henderson, Don Cherry, Charles Lloyd, Mike Manieri, Joe Lovano and Jack DeJohnette. As well as Kenny Wheeler, Albert Mangelsdorff, Tomasz Stanko, Dino Saluzzi, John Surman, John Taylor, Marilyn Mazur, Arve Henriksen, Mark Feldman, Paul Motian, Joey Baron, Jon Balke, Vertavo string quartet, Norma Winstone, Severi Pyysalo, Lena Willemark, Trio Mediaeval, Ferenc Snetberger, Craig Taborn and Marilyn Crispell. He regularly performs all over Europe, USA, Canada and Japan. He has also for shorter periods performed and studied ethnic music in Cuba and Mocambique as well as having done pioneer teaching of improvisation in North Korea.
At the present time, Anders Jormin leads his own trioTrees of light and quartet Pasado en claro and is a longtime member of the iconic Bobo Stenson trio. He is also constantly creating new projects of his own, highly appreciating challenging work on local and national level as well as his international obligations.
He is an ECM recording artist and an established composer in frequent demand for commissioned works in the fields of symphonic works (album f.ex. Symphony of birds) as well as choir music (album f.ex. Ama) and contemporary jazz. His two solo bass albums Alone and Xieyi have both been praised in unison worldwide. His album Ad lucem has been internationally highly appreciated for it´s composing for two female voices. His music for modern big band featuring the Japanese koto, Poems for orchestra (2020), won the critics’ poll in Sweden and has already been performed by some of Europe´s most respected professional big bands. His latest album for ECM, named Pasado en claro, was released January 2023 and was directly highly praised in international media.
