LAURITA PELENIŪTĖ (Lithuania)
25 April @10.30-15.00 in D-511

Laurita Peleniūtė is a singer, who preserves Lithuanian national musical traditions, culture and folk music. She manages to present folk in a new and engaging way, to reveal the code of our ancestor’s heritage, give a new meaning to the oldest songs and take them closer to the modern people.

Sutartinės (the name comes from the verb “to agree”, “to negotiate”) is a phenomenon of Lithuanian traditional music, an extremely old form of polyphony, which appeared even before the baptism of Lithuania. In 2010, sutartinės were added to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Sutartinės are a syncretic art that reflects the relationship between music, text and movement. Their most important feature is a syncopated rhythm, second consonances, and a narrow range of melody. These multipart chants are usually described as mantras, because of their meditative ritual power. While singing together, the unique, magical and uniting harmony is experienced.

The sutartinės masterclass

No need for musical knowledge, singing skills or Lithuanian language – Laurita masterfully decodes the songs in the ceremonial atmosphere. Singing in a circle liberates mind and emotions, awakens singing abilities you would not imagine having. The inner song is a heritage that everyone wears in their blood. Singing a person will never feel lonely.
