I Gemelli is an internationally acclaimed early music ensemble founded in 2018 by Emiliano Gonzalez Toro and Mathilde Etienne. Specialising in 17th-century vocal music, the ensemble is dedicated to bringing both major works of the Baroque repertoire and lesser-known or previously unpublished compositions to contemporary audiences.
I Gemelli is distinguished by its singer-led approach to performance, in which musical interpretation follows the natural inflections and rhetoric of the text rather than conventional instrumental direction. Committed to historically informed performance, the ensemble performs on period instruments and works closely with scholars and musicologists in developing its programmes. Its projects bring together internationally renowned performers and promising young singers and instrumentalists.
The ensemble made its international breakthrough in 2019 with a critically acclaimed debut recording of Chiara Margarita Cozzolani’s Vespro, which received several prestigious distinctions, including a Diapason d’Or of the Year. This was followed by a performance of Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris. Further acclaim came with the recordings Soleil noir, dedicated to the music of Francesco Rasi, and Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo, both of which received numerous international awards and critical recognition.
In 2022, the ensemble established its own record label, Gemelli Factory, to support its artistic projects and oversee the recording and production process. The label’s first release, A Room of Mirrors, was warmly received by audiences and critics alike, earning distinctions including Gramophone Editor’s Choice and a Diapason d’Or.
I Gemelli receives support from Adami, Spedidam, CNM, and the Orange Foundation.
