Brigitta Davidjants’s book explores the origins of To the Cold Land, the 1989 debut album by
legendary Estonian punk band J.M.K.E., and its significance in a range of social and cultural
contexts. Through the story of a single punk album, the book offers a window into Estonia’s
recent history, from Soviet occupation and Stalinist repression to the era of stagnation and
perestroika. The story of J.M.K.E. also sheds light on the workings of subcultures in the
Soviet Union and the role of popular culture in driving social change. Decades after its
release, the album has lost none of its relevance. In 2014, a panel of 102 music critics voted it
the greatest Estonian album of all time.
Written by Brigitta Davidjants, Senior Research Fellow at the Estonian Academy of Music
and Theatre, the book was published by British publisher Bloomsbury Academic as part of its
international 33 1/3 Europe series. It has attracted attention both in Estonia and abroad,
resonating with generations of punk scene veterans as well as younger readers from different
backgrounds, many of whom have credited the book with deepening their understanding of
Estonia’s recent history.
