ADMISSION DATES

Violin

Perform from memory a programme consisting of the following:

  • Two etudes featuring different techniques;
  • Two movements from a J. S. Bach Sonata or Partita for solo violin;
  • Either the first or both the second and third movements from a violin concerto;
  • A freely chosen piece.

Viola

Perform from memory a programme consisting of the following:

  • Two etudes featuring different techniques;
  • Two movements from a J. S. Bach Sonata or Partita for solo violin or a Suite for solo cello;
  • Either the first or both the second and third movements from a viola concerto (eg. Walton, Telemann, Hoff);
  • A freely chosen piece.

Cello

Perform from memory a programme consisting of the following:

  • Two etudes featuring different techniques;
  • Two movements from a J. S. Bach Suite for solo cello;
  • Either the first or both the second and third movements from a cello concerto;
  • A freely chosen piece.

Double Bass

Perform from memory a programme consisting of the following:

  • Two etudes featuring different techniques;
  • Two movements from a sonata (eg. Eccles, Marecello,) or the Siemandl Concert-Etude;
  • A freely chosen piece.

Harp

Perform from memory a programme consisting of the following:

  • Two etudes featuring different techniques;
  • A large form (Suite, Variations, Sonata, one movement from concert);
  • A freely chosen piece.

Classical Guitar

Perform from memory a programme consisting of the following:

  • Two etudes featuring different techniques (eg. Sor, Giuliani, Legnani, Brower, Villa-Lobos, etc.);
  • Two movements from a J. S. Bach Lute Suite or from a suite by another Baroque composer;
  • A large form (Suite, Variations, Sonata, one movement from concert).

Estonian Kannel

Perform from memory a programme consisting of the following:

  • A large form (sonata, variations, romantic ballades, or something comparable in length and substance) or a movement from it;
  • Two pieces in varying styles.

After the performance the candidate will be interviewed by a panel of faculty members. During the interview, the examination panel may test the candidate’s knowledge of music and culture. The interview will provide the opportunity for the candidate to demonstrate the sufficiency of their English language skills.

The examination panel will evaluate the following:

  • fluency and precision
  • expressiveness
  • technical proficiency
  • familiarity with various musical styles
  • conveyance of personal expression
  • technical difficulty of the repertoire
  • general knowledge of music and culture
