Composition


For specialization the applicant must:

  • submit copies of scores and recordings for a minimum of two original, short vocal and/or instrumental works that demonstrate creativity and strong composition skills;
  • demonstrate knowledge of various music eras through a listening comprehension test;
  • improvise on piano (or other instrument) on a theme given by the examiner;
  • perform three applicant-selected piano pieces that will demonstrate level of piano proficiency;
  • submit a portfolio of their original works.

During the evaluation the Examination Board may assess the applicant’s knowledge of his/her area of specialization and related cultural issues (Colloquium).

The Examination Board will assess and evaluate:

  • the composer’s artistic mindset and the originality and fluency of the works
  • the general level of music skills and abilities
  • the level of specialty-specific technical skills and abilities
  • the understanding of various music genres
  • the applicant’s creative ability
  • the applicant’s understanding of cultural and specialty-specific issues

The entrance examination is graded on a scale of 0−10.

 

Electro-acoustic Composition


For specialization the applicant must:

  • Provide at least two original electroacoustic compositions (total ~ 10 min);
  • Provide within 24-48 hours an electroacoustic composition on a given topic and material, using personal technical means;
  • demonstrate knowledge of the various music eras through a listening test;
  • submit a portfolio of their original works.

The evaluation will take place over two days and will consist of two parts. The initial evaluation will assess the candidate’s original works and his or her listening comprehension. The second evaluation will assess the remaining skills as listed above. The second evaluation will take place only if the applicant has passed the initial evaluation.

You should demonstrate an ability to communicate orally, pass a short written test and know basic musical terms in English.

  • Provide at least two original audiovisual compositions (total ~ 10 min);
  • provide within 24-48 hours an audiovisual composition on a given topic and material, using personal technical means;
  • demonstrate knowledge of the various music eras through a listening test;
  • submit a portfolio of their original works.

 

During the evaluation the Examination Board may assess the applicant’s knowledge of his/her area of specialization and related cultural issues (Colloquium).

  1. Test of Musical Hearing and Music Theory

Listening Tasks

  1. You will hear four excerpts which you will identify by modality. The excerpt number will be given before each one is played. Each excerpt will be played only once. Answer by placing an X into the appropriate square in the grid below. See Excerpt 1 as an example.
  2. You will hear four excerpts for which you will identify the meter (time signature). The excerpt number will be given before each one is played. Each excerpt will be played only once. Answer by placing an X into the appropriate square in the grid below. See Excerpt 1 as an example.
  3. You will hear a short melody played on a solo instrument. The melody is partially transcribed below. The melody will be played three times with the excerpt number given before each play. Choose the correct time signature (3/4, 4/4 or 6/8) and transcribe the melody onto the staff. Include all bar lines.
  4. You will hear five chords played by an ensemble of instruments. Each chord will be played twice. Identify the correct chord type by placing an X into the appropriate square on the grid below. See Chord 1 as an example.
  5. You will hear a number of chords played on a piano. Identify how many pitches there are in each chord.
  6. You will hear the original of an audio recording. Then you will hear the same recording played a number of times, each with a different effect added. In each clip, identify which effect has been added. Choose from the following: delay, reverb, high-pass filter, tempo change, flanger effect, pitch change.
  7. You will hear eight pairs of short audio clips of white noise. For each pair, identify which of the two is more quiet.
  8. You will hear eight pairs of pure tones. Identify which tone in each pair is lower in pitch.
  9. You will hear an audio clip of white noise to which a frequency filter has been added. In given places, certain frequency ranges have been either increased or decreased. Your task is to determine which frequency range (low 250-1000 Hz, medium 1000-4000 Hz, or high 4000-16000 Hz) has been altered. Changes in frequency will last five seconds followed by five seconds of unaltered white noise. The filter has been added to the audio clip six times.

The entrance examination is graded on a scale of 0-10.

 

Recording Arts


The candidate must:

  • present at least two recordings reflecting the candidate’s competence as a composer and sound engineer, with a duration of approximately 10 minutes
  • identify music of varying historical periods in the form of a listening test
  • describe technical aspects of recordings in the form of a listening test
  • submit a list of works in the field of sound engineering and composition
  • be able to converse on a variety of topics reflecting professional competence and knowledge of culture and society (colloquium)

The examination panel will evaluate the following:

  • Originality
  • Technique
  • Musicality
  • Knowledge of musical styles
  • Creative personality
  • General knowledge of music and culture

 

2. Music Theory

The exam will be graded on a scale of 0-10, with 5 being the minimum passing grade. The music theory component will be graded on a scale of 0-5 with 1 being the minimum passing grade. The music theory component will not determine overall placement among candidates.
