Musicology

Musicology Programme is currently only offered in Estonian.

Admission to the Master’s degree in Musicology is determined by an oral interview. During this interview, candidates are required to present a portfolio that demonstrates their scientific and creative achievements. This portfolio may include a bachelor’s thesis, published articles, reviews, and other creative works.

The oral interview evaluates the following aspects:
– the candidate’s clear and justified vision of the topic under study, i.e. the topic of the master’s thesis;
– the focus and systematic approach of previous research work (such as a bachelor’s thesis) or its equivalent (e.g., pedagogical thesis, project, etc.); in the case of research work, the scope of literature reviewed, as well as the linguistic and formal accuracy of the work, are also considered;
– the candidate’s debating skills, including logical reasoning and the accuracy and fluency of their expression;
– the candidate’s ability to apply knowledge acquired during previous studies in responding to questions;
– familiarity with musical culture.

NB! The admission interview does not assess the candidate’s knowledge of music theory (e.g., sight singing, solving music theory problems, or analysing harmony or form), unless such knowledge is specifically required by the chosen master’s thesis topic.

The entrance examination is graded on a 10-point scale. To fulfill the admission requirements and achieve a positive result, candidates must obtain a minimum of 5 points.
