Nordic and Baltic folk music universities’ conference NORDTRAD Tallinn 16.-21.04.2024

NORDTRAD is a week full of workshops, get togethers, new acquaintances, collaborations and a possibility to develop music education and your collaborative playing skills. NORDTRAD joins together folk music curricula and the meetings have taken place since 1996, each year in a different country. Today the network consists of 16 higher music education institutions offering different study programmes ranging from bachelor to PhD level. The overall goal of the NORDTRAD network is to strengthen Nordic-Baltic higher music education within the field of folk music.
For Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, it’s the first time to host the network meeting. To the conference we expect 5 students and two teachers from each of the partner universities, altogether about 150 people.

Activities during the week:

  • different workshops led by teachers from Estonia and from other network universities,
  • meetings of teachers, where best practices and study methods are shared and discussion on the development of the field are held,
  • students can practice playing together and find new creative ideas in mixed ensembles,
  • concerts, where well know musicians and students perform, teachers have their own concert, so do the mixed ensembles who will practice together every day, and also the students of the programme for graduate students, Nordic Master in Folk Music,
  • jam sessions in the evenings, where everyone can join in and share their music traditions,
  • cultural activities, where Estonian culture and local (music)traditions are shared.
