Admission Auditions

Piano


Perform from memory a programme consisting of the following:

  • A polyphonic work;
  • A large form (sonata, variations, romantic ballades, or something comparable in length and substance) or a movement from it (second and third movements are to be performed together);
  • A virtuoso etude.

 

Organ


Perform a programme consisting of the following (from memory or using the score):

  • A work predating J. S. Bach;
  • A work by J. S. Bach;
  • A work from the Romantic era.

The candidate will then be asked to demonstrate the following abilities:

  • Harmonise a melody given at the exam;
  • Improvise an ending to a 4-bar long theme given at the exam;
  • Sight-read a passage of music.

 

Harpsichord


Perform the following programme (either from memory or using the score):

  • A large form (sonata, variations, romantic ballades, or something comparable in length and substance);
  • Two works in different styles (French, Italian, German, English, etc.);
  • The candidate must be familiar with the figured bass and perform a work given to him/her at the exam.

 

Accordion


Perform from memory the following programme:

  • A polyphonic work;
  • A large form (sonata, variations, romantic ballades, or something comparable in length and substance) or a movement from it;
  • A character piece.

The program must contain works in varying styles; one must be an original work for accordion.

 

After the performance the candidate will be interviewed by a panel of faculty members. During the interview, the examination panel may test the candidate’s knowledge of music and culture. The interview will provide the opportunity for the candidate to demonstrate the sufficiency of their English language skills.

The examination panel will evaluate the following:

  • fluency and precision
  • expressiveness
  • technical proficiency
  • familiarity with various musical styles
  • conveyance of personal expression
  • technical difficulty of the repertoire
  • general knowledge of music and culture

The examination is graded on a scale from 0 to 10.
