Main Studies (MIX001) Exam Requirements MA

  • Voice (opera singing)

    The student participates actively in the work of the department, performs in at least one student evening or class concert during the study year, participates in master classes as an active contributor and audience member, and visits at least one student evening per term as an audience member.

    Term 1:

    • 1 aria from an oratorio,
    • 3 freely chosen arias,
    • 2 romances.

    One aria in the program should include a recitative.

    Term 2:

    • 1 aria from an oratorio,
    • 3 freely chosen arias,
    • 3 romances.

    One aria in the program should include a recitative.

    Term 3:

    • 4 arias, perform from memory from Master’s Degree Examination program.


    Term 4:

    Master’s Degree Examination (MIX011)

    • an aria from an oratorio,
    • 4-6 arias of different character,
    • 3 romances.

    The program should be artistically integrated and contain works in 4 languages, duration 35-45 min. At least one aria should be performed for the first time in the examination and at least one aria should be taken from the mandatory repertoire of international competitions.

  • Voice (oratorial and ensemble singing)

    Term 1: 

    • 4 arias:
      • one aria from a large-scale vocal work (oratorio, cantata or mass), including any recitatives
      • one aria by J. S. Bach, including any recitatives
      • one freely chosen aria from the Baroque period
      • one freely chosen aria
    • 2 solo songs
      • one song from the latter half of the 20th century
      • one freely chosen song


    Term 2: 

    • 4 arias:
      • one aria from a large-scale vocal work (oratorio, cantata or mass), together with any recitatives
      • one aria from the Italian or French Baroque, together with any recitatives
      • a freely chosen aria/scene from the early music repertoire, together with any recitatives
      • a freely chosen aria
    • 3 solo songs
      • a song from the latter half of the 20th century
      • two freely chosen songs


    Term 3: 

    Performance of works selected from the student’s Master’s concert program (duration 25–30 minutes).The program may be one of the following:

    a) At least two arias or songs, which may be chosen from a vocal cycle.

    b) A vocal cycle or movements from a vocal cycle

    c) A solo cantata by J.S. Bach, G.F. Handel, G.P. Telemann or other composer

    Term 4:
    Master’s Degree Examination (MIX011)

    Perform a full concert program (duration 35–40 minutes), which demonstrates the student’s vocal and musical abilities. Up to 75% of the concert program may consist of works performed at earlier exams. The program may consist of arias, solo songs, solo cantatas, song cycles, or a combination thereof.
