Natalia Volchenko graduated from the Tbilisi V. Sarajishvili State Conservatoire undergraduate and postgraduate studies under Professor Svetlana Egorova. She got master classes from Galina Vishnevskaya, Elena Obraztsova, Makvala Kasrashvili, Zurab Sotkilava, Gegam Grigoryan, Teimuraz Gugushvili. In 1993, being a third year student, she debuted as Amneris (Giuseppe Verdi’s Aida) at the Tbilisi Z. Paliashvili State Opera and Ballet Theatre. This role as well as the singer’s further operatic repertoire had been prepared under Maestro Djansugh Kakhidze. It is noteworthy that the famous conductor encouraged Natalia Volchenko to prepare and perform some soprano parts as well.

Natalia Volchenko’s wide repertoire, which she performed at the Tbilisi Opera Theatre as on the opera stages of Russia and the Post-Soviet countries, includes mezzo soprano’s parts in Verdi’s operas: Princess Eboli (Don Carlos), Azucena (Il Trovatore), Madalena (Rigoletto), Ulrica (Un ballo in maschera); Richard Wagner’s operas: Rienzi (Adriano), Walkyrie (Fricka), Der fliegende Holländer (Senta). Natalia Volchenko also performs: Santuzza (Pietro Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana), Carmen (Georges Bizet’s Carmen), Dalila (Camille Saint-Saens’s Samson et Dalila); Princess de Bouillon (Francesco Cilea’s Adriana Lecouvreur); Natela (Zakaria Paliashvili’s Abesalom and Eteri), Nano (Paliashvili’s Daisi), Barbale (Victor Dolidze’s Keto and Kote), Medea (Bidzina Kvernadze’s Kolkhetian Maiden); Rosina (Gioachino Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia), Charlotte (Jules Massenet’s Werther ); Polina, Liza, Countess (Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s The Queen of Spades) and Olga (Eugene Onegin), Marina Mnishek (Modest Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov) and Marfa (Khovanshchina); Lyubasha (Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Tsar’s Bride).

The concert repertoire of Natalia Volchenko includes Requiems by Mozart, Verdi, Bruckner; Mahler’s Second Symphony; a cycle for mezzo-soprano and orchestra by Mikheil Odzeli. At the solo recitals she has performed vocal music of the European, Georgian, Russian composers. Among them should be mentioned chamber-vocal music by Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov; Vocal Cycles by Schumann, Wagner, Mahler, de Falla, Mussorgsky, Shostakovich; arias from Bach’s cantatas and oratorios.
Natalia Volchenko is a laureate of Vano Sarajishvili Prize. She is the finalist and prize-winner of Toulouse International Singers Competition (France, 1994) and International Competition Le Voci Verdiane (Busseto, Italy, 1996). In 1995 she received the First Prize and laureateship at the First Republic Competition of Young Musicians. In 2011 she defended the doctoral thesis under Professor Eldar Getsadze and became a Doctor of Musicology. She is an author of several scientific articles, which have been published in the international scientific journals.

Natalia Volchenko is the Associate Professor of the Tbilisi State Conservatoire and the vocal teacher at the E. Mikeladze Central Music School.
